2014 Motorhome Awards: High-Top Van Conversion of the Year

Winner: IH N-Class 630SL available for sale at Southdowns Motorhome Centre

The IH N-Class 630 SL has been named the High-Top Van Conversion of the Year 2014 by Motorcaravan Motorhome Monthly (MMM), the UK's best-selling motorhome magazine, and Which Motorhome, the UK's number one magazine for motorhome testing, at their prestigious 2014 awards.

The MMM awards are now in their tenth year and for the third year running MMM has joined forces with Which Motorhome, with one set of combined awards which recognise the best new campervans and motorhomes on sale in the UK. The awards were sponsored by the Caravan Club and were held at Searcey's in Knightsbridge, London on Friday 6th December, with dealers and manufacturers from the motorhome industry present.

Expert and experienced judges MMM and Which Motorhome magazines looked at all the models new to the UK market or that have undergone significant design specification upgrades. To select a winner, the judges considered the functionality of the layout, the build quality and overall usability, as well as how the 'van performs on the road and on the campsite, right through to whether it offers value for money.

The IH N-Class 630 SL is a great example of a high-top campervan and impressed the judges because it rewrites the design book in a very creative way. It's the space-creating slide-out that takes centre stage, while replacing the side sliding door with a Hartal coachbuilt-style entrance helps to make more of the interior volume too. The slide-out's sofa converts into this two-berth's double bed, while there's also room for a palatial kitchen, superb washroom and large storage boot. The judges' favourite features included the great feeling of space, the perfect-height oven and the masses of storage, while details such as the kitchen's neat heat-proof pot stand on the worktop also impressed. They all agreed this is a truly radical and yet practical campervan.

Head of the judging panel and editor of Which Motorhome, Peter Vaughan, commented: “This high-top campervan has all the usual high-quality build of an IH with more space than any other comparable van conversion - the new N-Class 630 SL marks a new chapter in van conversions.”

While Daniel Attwood, Managing Editor of Motorcaravan Motorhome Monthly, said: “Innovation is never in short supply at a company like IH, but here even IH has surpassed itself. Quite simply this is the most innovative high-top campervan on the market.

The IH N-Class 630 SL was also named as a joint runner-up, for the overall Motorhome of the Year 2014 award.

Widely viewed as the fastest growing portion of the motorhome market, the high-top van conversion sector is home to major British and European manufacturers, as well as a large number of smaller specialist companies. Today's hightops can offer all the living area comforts and features of larger coachbuilt models but in a package that many owners find easier to drive.

Since its humble beginnings in 1992, IH has been the vision of one man, Ian Hartley, to design and build products for the leisure industry that not only met but exceeded the standards required by its discerning customers. The IH N-Class is priced from £66,245 and is built on a Fiat Ducato XLWB van. It is a two-berth motorhome which is 6.36 metres long. It has a 2.3-litre Multijet engine in 130 or 148bhp forms, or a 3-litre 177bhp unit.
