Stephen Delaney
Sales Specialist
Joining Southdowns in 2007 must have given Stephen Delaney a strong sense
of deja vue. He really has been here before, working at our Anchorage Park site
when it was a Mercedes-Benz dealership.
Q What attracted you to work for Southdowns?
A Initially I wasn’t sure whether I should make the move from Mercedes – where I
had been for 13 years – to a job where I would be selling a completely new
product. I suppose I was worried about leaving my comfort zone. I have known
MD Michael Ayling
for many years and worked with him at Portfield in the mid-1990s. He was very
persuasive and eventually convinced me I would enjoy life at Southdowns. I’m
glad he did because I can honestly say I have never looked back.
Q What are your key responsibilities?
A Every day is different, but my key role is to meet and greet customers, define
their needs and match them to the right vehicle. We have a fantastic choice of
motorhomes, ranging from a £12,000 VW right up to a £200,000 Concorde Liner, so
there really is something to suit every customer we see.
Q What is the best thing about working for the company
A It is good to be selling a prestige product and I enjoy working in a relaxed
but professional atmosphere. In my previous job I was under a lot of pressure
and the sales environment was highly charged. At Southdowns, although we
obviously want to sell motorhomes to our customers, we are in the leisure
industry and people are buying a fun product. We try to create a calm, friendly
sales environment and I think we succeed.
Q Does working with motorhomes hold an appeal for you?
A Selling motorhomes is more challenging than selling cars – although in a way
it is a similar sales message to working for a prestige motor manufacturer,
because you are selling a lifestyle not just a vehicle. I have learned a lot
from our customers, many of whom are very knowledgeable and I am pleased to say
that my old customers are now coming to see me here. Some of them now drive a
Mercedes and a motorhome!
Q If you could take a motorhome anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A I would love to go to Tuscany and the Italian lakes.
Q Finally, what is your personal philosophy?
A Give a little, take a little, share a little.
Stephen spent two years as head of hospitality on the Saudi Royal yacht in
Marbella. He now lives in Southsea with his partner. He still drives a
Mercedes but if he’s not careful his boss will talk him into that motorhome!
