2014 Motorhome Awards: Non-Fixed Bed Motorhome of the Year

Winner: Burstner Viseo i700 available for sale at Southdowns Motorhome Centre

The Burstner Viseo i 700 has been named Non-Fixed Bed Motorhome of the Year 2014 by Motorcaravan Motorhome Monthly (MMM) magazine, the UK’s best-selling motorcaravan magazine, and Which Motorhome, the UK’s number one magazine for motorhome testing, at their prestigious 2014 awards.

The MMM awards are now in their tenth year and for the third year running MMM has joined forces with Which Motorhome, with one set of combined awards which recognise the best new campervans and motorhomes on sale in the UK. The awards were sponsored by the Caravan Club and were held at Searcey’s in Knightsbridge, London on Friday 6th December, with dealers and manufacturers from the motorhome industry present.

Expert, experienced judges from MMM and Which Motorhome looked at all the models new to the UK market or that have undergone significant design specification upgrades. To select a winner, the judges considered the functionality of the layout, the build quality and overall usability, as well as how the motorhome performs on the road and on the campsite, right through to whether it offers value for money.

The judges felt that the Burstner Viseo i 700 deserved to win this category for several standout features, most notably its wonderfully swish kitchen with super-sized drawers and an oven at a convenient height. The washroom also scored highly as it features Burstner ’s latest shower room-creating swing wall. While up front, the first lounge has big-table dining, and the A-class drop-down bed provides berths one and two. But it’s the rear lounge that is the real star with its sumptuous L-shaped sofa and cube coffee table that helps make the double bed.

The judges all agreed this was a great motorhome perfectly suited to UK motorhomers. Editor of Which Motorhome and head of the judging panel, Peter Vaughan, commented: “A rear lounge as inviting as anything from a British manufacturer, plus A-class bodywork with a drop-down bed in German style, make this a great all-rounder.”

While Daniel Attwood, Managing Editor of Motorcaravan Motorhome Monthly, added: “With its German build quality, stylish kitchen, wonderful washroom and that highly appealing rear lounge - a feature so loved by British motorhomers - it’s little wonder this Burstner Viseo won our judges’ hearts.”

Both the Bailey Approach Autograph 625, and another Burstner, the Brevio t645 were both highly commended.

Non-fixed bed motorhomes focus on making the lounge areas as comfortable and roomy as possible, with seating aplenty for entertaining, whether that’s at the front of back of the motorhome. So, while an appealing lounge is a prerequisite, the judges were also on the hunt for a design that ensures the rest of the motorhome is as spacious as the lounge. In addition, because this layout sometimes means less than capacious storage, the judges also looked for models that at least had some external storage.

The Burstner Viseo i700 is priced from £60,250. It is built on a Fiat Ducato chassis-cowl and has four berths (two doubles). It is 6.96 metres long and has a 2.3-litre 130bhp engine as standard.
