2014 Motorhome Awards: Family Motorhome of the Year

Winner: Bailey Approach Autograph available for sale at Southdowns Motorhome Centre

The Bailey Approach Autograph 765 has been named Family Motorhome of the Year 2014 by Motorcaravan Motorhome Monthly (MMM), the UK's best-selling motorhome magazine, and Which Motorhome, the UK's number one magazine for motorhome testing, at their prestigious 2014 awards.

The MMM awards are now in their tenth year and for the third year running MMM has joined forces with Which Motorhome, with one set of combined awards which recognise the best new campervans and motorhomes on sale in the UK. The awards were sponsored by the Caravan Club and were held at Searcey's in Knightsbridge, London on Friday 6th December, with dealers and manufacturers from the motorhome industry present.

Expert and experienced judges from MMM and Which Motorhome magazines looked at all the models new to the UK market or that have undergone significant design specification upgrades. To select a winner, the judges considered the functionality of the layout, the build quality and overall usability, as well as how the 'van performs on the road and on the campsite, right through to whether it offers value for money.

The judges felt that the Bailey Approach Autograph 765 deserved to win this category, thanks to many aspects of its design and its value for money - something that is incredibly important in this sector. This Bailey is unique in the motorhome market: it is a generous low-profile - and genuinely family-sized - motorhome that provides six berths and, crucially, six three-point belted travel seats. Its unique talent is the lengthways drop-down bed above the pullman dinette, which provides a double sleeping space. The judges loved the super rear lounge, an area that will see mum and dad relaxing in style once the kids are in bed up front.

The specification of this motorhome is high with the ultra-low Al-Ko chassis, Alde radiator heating, super cooker and well-equipped cab all named as the judges' favourite features. Bailey's efforts to ensure the safety of all passengers through its crash-testing programme also add peace of mind for parents.

Editor of Which Motorhome magazine and head of the judging panel, Peter Vaughan, commented: “Bailey's combination of high specification and value for money is well-known now, but the drop-down bed here adds real innovation in this class.”

While Daniel Attwood, Managing Editor of Motorcaravan Motorhome Monthly, added: “Exceptional specification for the money and a clever design that allows a family of six to travel in total safety and relax in comfort when they get on site set this Bailey apart as the clear winner.”

The family motorhome market has been, perhaps, the hardest hit of all in recent recessionary times, as squeezed parental budgets have forced buyers into second-hand vehicles instead of buying new. However, 2014 sees a number of new family friendly motorhomes on the market, looking to boost the sector with innovative design. Families are usually looking for larger motorhomes with plenty of living space, but storage is often the Achilles' heel - a sixberth needs room for bedding and clothes for six, as well as all the kids' toys.

Bunk bed layouts are popular in this market, but they are by no means the only option, as this year's winner proves. Notes to editors: Bailey has been making caravans for 65 years and has earned a reputation for creating products with award-winning design, first-class build quality and unbeatable value for money. More recently, the Bristol-based company brought this same level of expertise to producing motorhomes, with the introduction of new Approach models, which first saw light of day in 2011.

The Bailey Approach Autograph 765 is priced from £47,450. It is based on a Peugeot Boxer with ultra-low Al-Ko chassis. It has six berths and six travel seats with three-point seatbelts. It is 7.45m long and has a 2.2HDi 130bhp engine.
